Dry Manure

We specifically process dry manure, the waste material that accumulates on top of animal bedding, generally wood shavings. This waste, composed of wood shavings, feces, urine, hay, and grass, is traditionally spread on fields, buried, composted, or burned. These practices contribute to significant environmental issues. HiPoint AG offers an ecological solution by separating and recycling dry manure, creating recycled wood shavings and biofertilizers. This process is effective for animals such as horses, chickens, ducks, donkeys and other dry manure producing animals.

Current Disposal Methods

Currently, four main disposal options for equine waste are used in the industry:

  1. Landfill Burying: Contributes to trapped methane off-gassing and occupies large amounts of space.
  2. Burning or Incineration: Creates airborne pollutants, including CO2 and ash deposits.
  3. Composting: Leads to significant CH4 off-gassing, phosphorus leaching, source pollution, and runoff.
  4. Spreading Manure on Fields: Commonly practiced but environmentally destructive due to wood not breaking down, creating nutrient-deficient soils, and contributing to leaching and off-gassing.

HiPoints Difference

The facility's processes are designed to significantly reduce GHG emissions, mainly methane (CH4), from decomposing equestrian waste left to rot on the ground through inadequate disposal or outside composting. This holistic approach ensures that the equestrian recycling shavings facility is both environmentally sustainable and economically viable by converting waste into reusable products and capturing harmful emissions.

Quantifiable GHG Results

  • Mitigating Methane Emissions: By processing 36,000 to 60,000 tons of stall residuals annually depending on the size of facility, HiPoint AG effectively reduces methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas. FAOSTAT shows that 10% of all livestock GHG off-gassing comes from horses and horse manure management. Given industry growth, these numbers are growing.
  • Displacing Virgin Wood Shavings Production: Our production of hypoallergenic, virtually dust-free recycled wood shavings reduces the need for other carbon-emitting virgin wood shaving manufacturing. This conservation of forests enhances carbon sequestration. We can recycle the same wood fibres five times, leading to reduced CO2 production due to less reliance on tree farms.
  • Reduced Reliance on Chemical Fertilizers: Using organic matter biofertilizer with biochar is an eco-friendly alternative to chemical fertilizers, reducing the carbon footprint associated with conventional agricultural practices.

Environmental Benefits

  • GHG Emissions Reduction: Our process reduces GHG emissions (Methane CH4 off-gassing) by up to 100,000 lbs per site annually.
  • Minimized Nutrient Overloading: This approach reduces phosphorous overloading in waterways, a major cause of harmful algae blooms. Thus, it protects water quality and reduces cleanup costs.
  • Deforestation Reduction: Recycling the same wood fibre up to five times reduces deforestation by 80%, maintaining natural GHG reduction.
  • HiPoint's solution: addresses methane emissions from horse stall waste, significantly contributing to global efforts to limit temperature rise.

Sustainability

The DEP—Department of Environment Protection Act is concerned about pollutants such as Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potassium, Fecal coliforms, E. coli, and mold, which have created algal blooms and lowered water quality in wetlands and conservation areas, air quality, lakes, rivers, and wildlife habitat protection. Horse waste has become a huge factor in contributing to these pollutants. Each HiPoint Facility is designed to naturally track and treat up to 60,000 tons of horse stall residual waste (wood, manure, hay, and grass).
